BANANA BLOSSOM (Baale hoovina palya in kannada)

Kelphulachi stir fried bhaji (Baale Hoovina Palya in Kannada) Banana blossom, kelphul also Known as banana hearts, banana flowers are loaded with fibre, protein, potassium, calcium, copper, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and Vitamin E. It is very good for diabetic people.

Ingredients:

· 2 tbsp coconut oil – 1 tbsp

· Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

· Uddina bele/split black gram/urad dal - 1 tsp

· Whole red Chilli – 2 (bedgi mirchi)

· Hing – ¼ tsp

· Curry leaves – 8-10

· Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

· Red Chilli powder – 1 tsp

· Fresh grated coconut – ¼ cup

· Tamarind (small ball)

· Jaggery (Lemon sized)

· Salt

· Water


Method:

· Take fresh banana flower. Firstly, peel the petals and collect the florets.

· Some banana flowers will be slightly bitter so discard 2 - 3 outer petals. Remove the petals (and discard it) until you cannot peel it anymore. Clean the florets too.

· Chop the banana flower and immediately transfer it in water. You can add little buttermilk to the water. This will protect the banana flower from blackening.

· Now take a kadai add water and cook the banana flowers for 10-12 minutes. Let the vegetable submerge in water. Cover it with a lid. Discard this water and keep the chopped banana flowers aside.

· Now take a kadai with coconut oil in it add mustard seeds, udid dal, whole red mirchi, hing and curry leaves.

· Now add the cooked banana flowers and give it a good mix.

· Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, tamarind, jaggery and salt.

· Give a good mix. Cook for 7-8 mins.

· Add grated coconut and give a good mix.

· Banana Flower Palya is ready to be served with rice, chapati or side dish to dal, rasam or sambar.
